7 Tips For Painting Your Bathroom in Milford, CT
Glenn Williamson • June 9, 2021

Painting your bathroom at home is not as easy as painting your living room or your bedroom, especially if it’s your first time doing it. The space inside your bathroom is small, and not just that, it’s also full of water from different sources. That’s why if you’re planning to paint your bathroom for the first time, you’ll be needing some tips on how to do it right. Here are 7 tips for painting your bathroom in Milford, CT.

1. Use The Right Paint

Your bathroom will always get wet as you use it, so you cannot avoid the water from getting into your paint. That’s why you should use the right paint for your bathroom — the one that has mold-inhibiting agents as well as provides a better surface for resisting moisture. It may be a bit expensive compared to other types of paint, but it’s surely more durable than the cheap ones.

2. Clean The Surface That You Will Paint

Accumulated layers of dirt over a long period of time on the surface of the walls in your bathroom can interfere with your painting project. That’s why it is very important to clean the surface that you will paint — soap scum on the bathtub and shower can make your paint peel off. Use trisodium phosphate (TSP) to clean off the gunk so that you won’t compromise your bathroom painting job.

3. Remove The Toilet Tank

It is very hard to paint the narrow space between the toilet tank and the wall since it is very tight and small. You have to carefully apply the painter’s masking film and tape around the tank and brush continuously to achieve a solid paint color. Although it sounds difficult and messy, you have to remove the toilet tank when painting your bathroom. Turn off the water supply, flush the toilet, then remove the tank — just don’t forget to put old clothing on the floor to avoid spills.

4. Remove All The Hardware

Once you’re done cleaning and removing all the dirt from the surface of the walls, you should go remove all the hardware. Remove all the outlet covers, light switch plates, mirrors, and towel racks inside your bathroom. Bathrooms typically have small spaces, so anything that gets in the way in your painting job must be removed.

5. Cover The Areas That Won’t Be Painted

This is your usual reminder when painting, but it is more useful when painting your bathroom. Cover the areas that you will not paint, especially the ones that you cannot remove or transfer to a safer place. This includes the trim, bathtub surround, backsplash, and other things that won’t be painted should be covered. You can use drape drop cloths to cover the bathroom vanity, sink, mirror, and floor.

6. Apply Primer Before Painting

Don’t forget to apply a primer before you start painting the walls of your bathroom. Priming the walls before painting will make your paint job look better and more professional. Especially if your paint color is a darker color, you’ll definitely want to use a primer that can stand up to the test. You can use an air-purifying primer or a stain-blocking primer if you think that your bathroom gets dirty all the time.

7. Paint The Ceiling With The Same Color

Your bathroom is usually a small space, so you want to make it look bigger. That’s why you should paint the ceiling the same color as the walls. When you paint your ceiling with a different color, you might cut off the height of your bathroom. So paint your ceiling with the same color and make your bathroom look more spacious.
